Commanding Influence: Leading Through Emotions.

“You can only lead well if your will is louder than your emotions,” ~Naomi Ziedins

Leadership is not immune to the influence of emotions; in fact, it’s deeply intertwined with them. Emotions can fuel passion, empathy, and connection, which are all essential elements of effective leadership. However, it’s crucial for leaders to strike a balance between acknowledging their emotions and maintaining the resolve to act in the best interests of their team or organization.

In practice, this means that leaders must have the capacity to set aside personal feelings when making decisions that impact others. They must resist the temptation to react impulsively based on emotions like anger or fear and instead rely on a rational, values-driven approach. This ability to transcend emotional impulses and uphold a steadfast commitment to their vision and principles is what allows leaders to inspire trust and confidence in and from their teams.

Physical emotions are indeed intricate chemical reactions within our bodies. These reactions, while essential for our survival and well-being, can also be powerful and sometimes overwhelming. Allowing these emotions to dictate our actions without conscious control can be perilous. It’s akin to riding a turbulent wave without a rudder; we may find ourselves pulled in directions that don’t align with our values or long-term goals. Recognizing and understanding the biochemical nature of emotions empowers us to navigate them more wisely, making choices that align with our principles and aspirations rather than succumbing to impulsive reactions. It reminds us that while emotions are a fundamental part of the human experience, we possess the capacity to master them, ensuring our decisions and actions are driven by reason and intention rather than mere chemical impulses.

Ultimately, the essence of leadership lies in the strength of one’s willpower to steer a course, even in the face of emotional turbulence. It’s a testament to the leader’s determination and resilience, underscoring that true leadership is not about being devoid of emotions but about mastering them and channeling them towards a greater purpose.
