Journal, “Check!” Now What?

As the year draws to a close, there’s a powerful practice that often goes overlooked: revisiting your journals. Those scribbles, musings, and reflections from the past months might seem like mere ink on paper, yet taking a moment to peruse through them can be a powerfully transformative experience. As you flip through the pages, the mundane transforms into the extraordinary, and you find yourself appreciating the tapestry of experiences that make up your life.

It’s easy to succumb to tunnel vision, a myopia that limits our perspective. Revisiting your journals acts as a corrective lens, widening your view of events and emotions. What seemed like an insurmountable hurdle at the time might now appear as a stepping stone to growth. It’s a lesson in resilience and a reminder that obstacles are often opportunities in disguise, a tool for recognizing personal growth and healing. Flipping through the pages, you witness the evolution of your thoughts and emotions. What once felt like an open wound may now be a scar—a testament to your strength and resilience. It’s a powerful acknowledgment of the healing that occurs with the passage of time.

The act of revisiting journals is more than a trip down memory lane—it’s a practice that promotes internal motivation. As you reflect on your past experiences, you rediscover the fuel that propels you forward. Those dreams, aspirations, and moments of triumph documented in your journal become a wellspring of inspiration, pushing you to set new goals and reach for greater heights.

They say that the best way to retain information is to engage multiple senses. Revisiting journals aligns with this principle. The act of experiencing, hearing, seeing, and writing something down cements it into our beings. It’s not just a record; it’s a living document that encapsulates the essence of our journey.

Revisiting your journal takes the process to a new level. It involves looking at your experiences through a different lens, gaining fresh insights and perspectives. This revision is more than editing; it’s an exercise in self-awareness, allowing you to distill and retain the growth discovered throughout the year.

Before you bid farewell to the worn pages and weathered ink: don’t throw away your journals. Instead, treasure them as artifacts of your journey. They are more than a collection of words; they are a testament to your resilience, your joys, and your triumphs and learns.  Leave them as a legacy for your loved ones. Your unique perspective, your lessons learned, and your distinct experiences are invaluable. They form a narrative that only you can tell. By keeping your journals, you’re leaving behind a mark, a perspective that others can learn from and, perhaps, avoid the pitfalls you navigated.  Concerned about legibility?!  If there are areas that are unreadable, wonderful!  This gives your authorship wonder and excitement with the unknowns or subtle blips in the narrative, encouraging future readers to ask more questions and increase their own discovery!

And as you turn the page into a new year, get yourself a fresh journal! This blank canvas eagerly awaits the ink of your thoughts, dreams, and reflections. It’s a space to continue the tradition of self-discovery and growth.

As you embark on the journey of a new year, carry the wisdom of the past with you. Keep your journals close, for they are not just pages filled with words but a living testament to the remarkable journey that is uniquely yours. Get a new journal, yet let the old ones remain—a legacy of your experiences, waiting to impart lessons and insights for generations to come.
